Here's the official word from the New York Knicks:

New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh announced today that Mike D’Antoni has been named the 24th head coach in the franchise’s 62-year history.

Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"After thorough discussions with several impressive candidates, it was clear that Mike D’Antoni is the right coach to lead the New York Knicks," Walsh said.

Mike D'Antoni and Donnie Walsh"Mike has established himself as one of the top coaches in our game and his expertise will be key as we work towards our goal of bringing winning basketball back to New York."

D’Antoni has compiled a .608 winning percentage (267-172) in six seasons as an NBA head coach with the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets.

Named NBA Coach of the Year in 2004-05, D’Antoni has guided the Suns to 54 or more wins in each of the last four seasons while earning a reputation as one of the top offensive minds in the game.

The Mullens, WV native brings over three decades of professional basketball experience to New York as a player, coach, front office executive and scout in the NBA, ABA and the Italian League.

"It is an honor to be named head coach of the New York Knicks, one of the most storied franchises in all of sports," D’Antoni said. "I am thankful to Donnie for this opportunity and I look forward to the challenge of producing a winner for New York."

D’Antoni guided the Suns to the postseason in each of the last four seasons, including consecutive trips to the Western Conference Finals in 2005 and 2006. After coaching Denver during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, D’Antoni went overseas and led Benetton Treviso to the 2002 Italian League Championship before being named head coach of the Suns 21 games into the 2003-04 season.

The 57-year old D’Antoni coached the 2007 Western Conference All-Star Team and currently serves as an assistant coach for USA Basketball’s Men’s Senior National Team that will compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

A Great Day For The Knicks

It's a great day for the Knicks organization, and when Donnie Walsh says, "It's not the players, it's the mix of players" that has contributed to the team's struggles in recent seasons, Clyde Frazier and I second that emotion.

With that said, Clyde and I evaluate what affect the arrival of Donnie Walsh will have on the Knicks future.

Observations From Inside The Donnie Walsh Press Conference

Posted on April 2, 2008 by David Rabinowitz

Filed Under: Behind The Scenes , David Rabinowitz , Donnie Walsh , NBA , New York Knicks

Pre-conference

It's about 30 minutes before the press conference is set to begin; the cameramen and photographers are here setting up, checking their white balance. There's literally a guy standing in front of the dais holding a piece of white printer paper for his photographer. Weird.

Picture a graph partially filled in with a No. 2 pencil. That's what the grid of chairs looks like as reporters file in slowly.

Walsh2_040208There's a pretty nice spread laid out for the press. It's not quite palatial, but it's no school cafeteria either. If only people weren't staring at me as I make my way toward the buffet. It's lunch time and I could totally go for one of those chocolate chip cookies right now.

Donnie Walsh has yet to arrive, but there's a lot of small talk going on. I'm trying to eavesdrop without making it look too obvious. Being a fly on the wall would sure come in handy right now.

There's a lot of movement now as members of the media rush to their seats as the man of the hour finally makes his way into the room with Garden chairman, James Dolan, and SVP of communications, Barry Watkins.

At every press conference I've attended or seen on TV, there's usually at least three seats with a number of microphones perched on a long table. Today, there's only one seat.

Conference

While the stage seems calm, there's an awful lot of movement as the photogs are scuttling about.

Man, these guys, and gals, get themselves into some funky positions to get a good shot. They must take Pilates. It sounds like a drumline as they snap away.

The opening statements are over. Walsh seems calm and composed as he answers questions.

Dolan040208

Walsh's ability to make the room laugh then stand at attention two questions later is impressive.

A reporter's cell phone went off for the second time, but no one seems to care.

And we're done.

For now.

Now the video people are bustling around to get in the next position while reporters are comparing notes.

After answering questions for 45 minutes, Walsh now has to sit and endure several one-on-ones. The man is a machine. He hasn't stopped to take a sip of water once. Here's hoping he stays hydrated!
